SPECTACULAR RACES, AND TURNOUT, BUT BITTERSWEET: Sept 10th Race Report

We had a banner turnout, spectacular weather, well-trained volunteers, prospects for a Y-Flyer renaissance, coverage by The Republic newspaper, and a fun gathering after the race. On the flip-side there were a bunch of sailors that had to turn back, unable to start or finish even the first race for one reason or another. And sadly after the race we learned of the passing of John Sohn, a member of the GYC since its early days and active in the club till just a couple of years ago (see above blog post about John).

It was a glorious day for a sailing race with skill-testing winds, sunny skies and pleasant temperatures.   

Eighteen sailors left their docks Unfortunately six had to return without finishing the first race due to rigging or other problems and two had to limp through both races with damaged rigging (if anyone is aware of available Laser centerboards, Laser rudders or Y-Flyer rudders, please let us know).  We had plenty of capsizes, but did not approach the number from the epic race of June 24^th.

GYC’s “Media Relations Chairperson”, Jim Riffle arranged for The Republic newspaper sports editor Ted Schultz and photographer Gregg Jones to cover our race.  Jim took them all over the course during the race and explained the race protocol, etc.  Ted Schultz joined us at the protest meeting after the race and chatted with many of us about our sailing adventures and the club.    Ted wrote a great article about the club that we encourage you to read.  Here is the link:  http://www.therepublic.com/2017/09/19/sailing_away/).  And you are enjoying the fine photos taken by Gregg Jones.
 
We had a great turnout and wonderful snacks at the Protest meeting.  There were four generations of sailors present. A few don’t know that they are sailors -yet. Thanks Arlene Truex for hosting.

Terry and Bernice Rains took responsibility for the Committee Boat in their pontoon for the first time after learning the ropes on a number of occasions this year from both Committee Boat and sailboat perspectives.  They were joined by Cindy Bartlett and Lisa Duret.  The foursome did a great job of officiating an eventful race – Thanks!  Great anchoring skills in that fast wind by the way.   We sailed one of our most fun courses of the year as set up by Dianne Fisher with help from Kevin Preuss.  It was quite long, and appropriate to the fast winds with challenging first and final legs – Thanks!

Very noteworthy is that four Y-flyers left their docks for the race.  That is a Y-flyer renaissance of sorts since the most we’ve had in recent times was three back when Wayne Truex, Bob Orben and Dick Pitman were skippering at the same time. Not sure how long ago we had four, but it is a very long time.  Racing for the first time on Grandview was a brand new Y-Flyer recently acquired by John Auld and raced with his skilled crew Paul Hass.  Gulp, its fast!

 We were thrilled to have Lance and Bianca Snider join us again in their Y-flyer.  And John Cord attempted to return to active racing status the Y-Flyer acquired from Dick Pitman.  Catey Hale and daughter Elizabeth joined us in their Y-Flyer as well.  Unfortunately, perhaps due to the fast winds, problems were encountered by three of the four, and only John Auld and Paul Hass finished either race.  Once rigging etc. on the other boats has been repaired we will be seeing all those glorious double-sailed Y-flyers competing together again.  Also double-sailed and double doctored, it was great to see the skilled father and son team of Tom and Ben Cartwright in that fast, tall-sailed and tall-bowed Thistle out for its second showing this season.  It is quite a sight, especially when it is coming toward you in close quarters!

Also noteworthy is that two of our captains/crew with new –to-Grandview boats did very well in this race.  See the race results below regarding John Auld/Paul Hass in the new Y-Flyer and Matt Bartlett in his new Laser.  With those additions and with the Butterflies now in the International Class, competition has really been cranked up a notch in both classes.

In the Laser Class Jim Voelz won both races and Matt Bartlett came in 2^nd, one minute (or 5%) behind Jim in both races.

The International Class had a big turnout; unfortunately three boats didn’t finish either race.  Nevertheless five boats finished both races with Peggy Voelz and John Auld/Paul Hass taking first place in the first and second races respectively.  Tom Schroeder/Arlene Truex took 2^nd place in the first race and Peggy finished second in the second race.

On an overall handicapped basis Jim Voelz won both races with Peggy Voelz taking second in the first race and John Auld taking second in the second race.

Resolution  and lessons from protest at August 20th race:

The tentative results for the August 20^th races are now final since the protest was withdrawn:   Lessons:  1) “Overlap” related to “room-at-the-mark rules applies to boats approaching the mark from far different angles (may not be intuitive), and  2) If protesting, make sure the other party is notified in time to take their two 360 degree penalty turns if they so-choose.

Lot owners and their families and guests gathered at Steve and Vicki Zeller’s lakefront and enjoyed catching up with one and other, the expansive view of the lake and the morning sunshine.

Labor Day seemed an appropriate time to take a moment to appreciate the labors of our GLOA board members, Sewer board members, those who volunteer on the various committees, Beth Ann Dismore, Administrative Assistant, and David Warble, Lake Manager.  So we did!  And Brad Arthur was specifically recognized for his nine years of leadership on the board by board representative Frank Reindl.  Brad in turn thanked his fellow board members past and present for their fine work during that significant period of time in the lake’s history.

New Sailor, New Boats, Close Races, Courteous Power Boaters: August 20th Race Report:

Ben Cartwright joined us for the first time, captaining the Cartwright Thistle without a crew. Welcome Ben!  And Matt Bartlett sailed his just-acquired Laser for the first time, expanding the Laser fleet even further.  And while John Auld did not sail (but volunteered instead), he will be picking up his recently acquired Y-flyer this week. So he and Paul Hass will be back out on the race course.   Winds were light, but enough for two good races that were fairly close.  

Jim Riffle monitored the race course from his pontoon and reported that several boaters with swimmers in the water between race markers were receptive when he alerted them that they were about to be descended upon by sailors in tight races.  Without complaint they boarded their boats and moved outside of the race course.  We appreciate their courtesy!  And thanks Jim!

We are also grateful to John Auld, Cindy Bartlett, Bob Orben and Mimi Riffle for volunteering on the Committee Boat, and to Sherri Agnew for setting up the race course with assistance from Kevin Preuss.

In the first race, newcomer Ben Cartwright arrived a bit late and as a first-timer needed a bit of instruction from the Committee Boat, so he "audited" the first race. Nevertheless he sailed the course and was second to cross the finish line, although his finish didn’t count for scoring purposes.  We were impressed that he was able to handle the Thistle so well solo, and hope to see him and the Cartwright family competing again soon.

Sailors: Just a reminder that if you need a crew, let us know during the week prior to the Sunday race and we will try to match you up with someone wanting to crew. Ditto to those without a boat wanting to crew for someone.

Sherri won the first race in her Butterfly

Sherri Agnew was first overall on a handicapped basis in the first race in her Butterfly, followed by Peggy Voelz in her Butterfly, so the Butterflies ruled!  Jim Voelz was close behind, and was first in the Laser Class by about a minute and a half.  The other three Lasers; Laura Garrett, Dianne Fisher, and Matt Bartlett, finished in that order, with the first finishing within 16 seconds of the last – very close indeed!   These three were even closer in the second race.

By the way,  we are aware of a one-owner Butterfly sailboat for sale.  This is a stable, easy-to-rig and easy-to-handle boat.  It can accommodate 2 people, but is sailed by one. See the "Port" column.

 In the second race on an overall handicapped basis, Jim Voelz in his Laser won by a bit over a minute and a half over Peggy Voelz in her Butterfly.  They were followed by the three Lasers in this order; Matt Bartlett, Dianne Fisher, and Laura Garrett, all within 10 seconds.   In the International Class Peggy Voelz was first followed by Sherri Agnew and Ben Cartwright.

Thanks to Arlene Truex for hosting the protest meeting at which the protest was discussed, but not decided since a number of our “officials” were traveling, or attending to others who were.  We’ll get a ruling at the next protest meeting.

Our next race, the “Labor Day Trophy Race” is not on Labor Day.  It is on Sunday, September 10^th.

Die-Hards Get a Dry Race "Window" and Good Winds: August 6th Race Report

It was a drizzly Sunday and the radar and wind forecasts were not very promising.  With that and some leaky boats in the fleet, participation was so-so with seven die-hard sailors.  The die-hards were rewarded. The race was dry and the winds were good so we had two close races before the drizzle returned.

Thanks to Kevin Preuss for not making the easier choice of cancelling the race, and to Steve Willment for setting up the race with Kevin’s assistance.  Thanks also to our fine Committee Boat volunteers, Jack and Sandi Miller, Gretchen Fisher and Susan Egbert.  Susan filled in for Steve Fisher.  Steve’s anchor tossing and lifting skills were missed by this team who have now run three races this year.  We are very grateful.  Jim and Mimi Riffle watched from their pontoon boat, ready to help out in any way.  And we also appreciate their taking in the marks at the end of the race!  The protest meeting wrapped up a little early prompted by some rain.  We swapped stories about drop-offs for the first year of college.  Thanks to Arlene Truex for hosting us.

Our starts were excellent with no laggards crossing the starting line. In the second race start, Tom Schroeder gambled by tacking immediately after crossing the line while the other five boats stayed on a starboard tack.  The gamble paid off and he was way ahead of the fleet until he took another gamble.  After rounding the second mark, he headed for the center of the lake in search of better wind en route to the third mark than experienced on the more conventional route in the first race.  This gamble was a bad choice though, and the four Lasers beat him by a wide margin to the third mark.  Those Lasers stayed practically on top of each other for most of the race with only the differences coming during the final leg.  There was only a one-minute difference among the four Lasers in the 22 minute race.

In the first race Jim Voelz and Laura Garret were first and second among the Lasers and also overall on a handicapped basis.  Peggy Voelz and Sherri Agnew were first and second in the International Class.

In the second race Jim Voelz and Laura Garret were again first and second among the Lasers and also overall on a handicapped basis.  Peggy Voelz and Tom Schroeder were first and second in the International Class.

Sailboard Racing Returns After Two Decade Absence, and a New Sailor - July 30th Race Report

 
We enjoyed high participation, good winds, and close races on a perfect summer day. Welcome to Terry Rains who participated in his first race, crewing for Captain John Auld.  And we had our first sailboard racer since the last millenium.
  

Thanks to our committee boat volunteers Beth Auld, Cindy Bartlett, Bernice Rains and Jim and Mimi Riffle.  Thanks also to Jim and Peggy Voelz for setting up a good course for the Northeast wind, and to them and/or Kevin Preuss who changed the starting direction of the course after the wind shifted to the East.  Thanks also to Arlene Truex for hosting us for another fun protest meeting.

SAILBOARDS Racing on Grandview Lake in the last millennium.  There are a few token sailboats also.  Can you identify a sailboarder associated with a particular sail in either of the above photos?  Yours perhaps?  If so, leave a message on the number in the "contact us" section at the top. Be specific about which picture and which sail.

We think champion sailor Peggy Voelz was the last to race a sailboard back in 1999.   Twenty-something years ago more sailboarders competed in races at Grandview than sailboats as you can see in the photo above. With recent emphasis on core strength and the associated popularity of paddle boarding,  it is not as much a surprise as it would have been five years ago that a sailor showed up to race a sailboard again.   Our sailboarder was Matt Bartlett who began sailing with us last year after he and committee boat volunteer Cindy Bartlett moved to Grandview and immediately jumped into sailboat racing. 

OK, this is not Matt Bartlett (we didn't get a photo of him). But it is one of our sailors from a couple of decades ago.  Know who?  It is the first person mentioned in the paragraph below.

Other than a few aggravating “dead spots”, the winds were fairly consistent which made for close races.  In the first race in the Laser Class, Jim Voelz came in first, beating Tom Jennings by about 40 seconds. Dianne Fisher was only 10 seconds behind Tom for 3^rd in the Laser Class.

But wait, its closer!

Things get more interesting if we apply the handicap that equalizes all the boats for their designed-in speed characteristics. In the first race for instance, Jim Voelz was first overall, but Peggy Voelz in her Butterfly came in second only one second ahead of Catey and Elizabeth Hale in their Y-Flyer (third overall), and only three seconds ahead of Tom Jennings in his Laser (fourth overall).  That is really close!

In the second race Jim Voelz and Tom Jennings were only 20 seconds apart and Kevin Preuss and Dianne Fisher just 15 seconds apart, finishing 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th respectively in the Laser Class.

In the International Class Peggy Voelz (1^st) and Catey & Elizabeth Hale (2^nd) were 35 seconds apart and Tom Schroeder and Arlene Truex (3^rd) were behind Catey & Elizabeth by 32 seconds.

On an overall handicapped basis, Jim Voelz and Tom Jennings were 1^st and 2^nd, and Peggy Voelz was 3<sup>rd.

CHANGE IN CLASS CATEGORIES OF SAILBOATS:

We have moved the Butterfly sailboats into the “International Class” which is scored on a handicapped basis.  This will bring even greater competition to that class, with fine Butterfly sailors like Sherri Agnew and Peggy Voelz.  The change will be retroactive for scoring purposes to the first race of 2017.   We will now have three classes:

Lasers (a fleet of about ten) scored based on finish order compared to other Lasers only.

International (a fleet of about twelve including Butterflies, Catamarans, JY-15s, M-Scows, Thistles, Y-Flyers and any other boat) scored based on handicapped times (see below).

Sailboards! (If we count sailboards that are up in the rafters of garages and boat houses around the lake,  this might be a sizeable fleet.   In the meantime we'll call it a fleet of one).  And until Matt gets some competition or we gather enough data to calculate a handicap, he always wins first in his class for scoring purposes.

Because sailors tend to (eye roll alert) be a bit competitive, we calculate handicapped times for the Lasers as well as the International class, and publish the resulting overall finish order.  

ABOUT HANDICAPPING:

Unlike golf, we only handicap for boat design, not for skill level. 

The handicapping factors and mathematics we use are based on lots of race data submitted by large sailing clubs around the world and comes to us, along with the rules we follow, via the organization U.S. Sailing.  

Come trophy time, handicapping helps us score based on the skill of the sailor instead of the inherent speed of the design of their boat.   As an example, the Butterfly model of sailboat is slower than many other sailboats and receives an appropriate handicap.  Applying the handicap can make a big difference.  For instance Peggy Voelz won both of the two races in the International class on a handicapped basis in her Butterfly and was second overall in the first race.  This despite the fact that hers was the last sailboat to cross the finish line in the first race and second-to-last to cross the finish line in the second race.

The start of race #2.  Good winds for first two marks.

First-time volunteers Terry & Bernice Rains joined us (Welcome!) .  And we had visitors from faraway places sailing with us.  Rachel, a friend of John Gall’s from Wyoming crewed for John on the Hobie catamaran. Kudos to Rachel for re-stitching the torn jib from a practice run earlier in the week.  Gediminas, Tom & Julia Schroeder’s former foreign exchange student from Lithuania (now living in California) crewed for Tom in the JY-15, and helped out with a "wing-to-wing" finish (wind from directly behind, main sail out to one side, jib out to other side for maximum sail surface area for push from behind).   Gediminas’ bride, Christina, cheered them on from the Truex dock.

Welcome back also to Sherri Agnew who, as part of her 2017 debut, came in 2^nd place overall in the 2^nd race.  We were also fortunate to have John Auld and Paul Hass compete.  They were able to get the yellow Y-Flyer patched up after their June 25^th difficulties.   

And Cindy Bartlett was back on the water, assisting Jim Riffle in keeping an eye out for sailors needing assistance from the Riffle pontoon boat.  Thanks Jim and Cindy!   Matt Bartlett attempted to be the first wind-surfer racing in twenty-something years, but alas, the winds were too weak to allow passage to the main lake from the inlet.  We will look forward to a future history making attempt.

We had good winds to the 2^nd mark of each race, but the final segments of both races were excruciatingly windless. What a change from the epic winds of the June 25^th race.

We had a fun protest meeting at Arlene Truex’ s  where we re-lived the action packed race of June 25^th and “cried in our beer” about our mistreatment by the wind in this race.

July 4th Breakfast & Kayak/Paddleboard Race at the Cassidy/Fishers

JULY 4TH BREAKFAST

Grandview Neighbors gathered at Mark Cassidy and Dianne Fisher’ beautiful home in delightful weather for donuts, coffee and juice to celebrate Independence Day. We recognized that generations of Americans have made the country a great place, and defended our hard-won freedoms.   The upper deck provided a great view of the kayak and paddleboard race.   Thanks Mark, Dianne and Carissa for hosting us!
