2019 SAILING SEASON & THE AWARDS "PROTEST MEETING"

A summary of our 2019 season in photos begins a the top of the Starboard (right) column.
(smartphone users will have to scroll down and click on "view web version" to see the full blog with port and starboard columns).
In late October we held an awards "Protest Meeting" for sailors and race volunteers.
At this event we revealed the winners of our season-long sailing competition, recognized our wonderful race volunteers and event hosts and had some special awards to present. The event was hosted in perfect weather by Beth and John Auld overlooking the lake.

Many of our Committee Boat volunteers were with us and were recognized for making our races possible.  We are very grateful to them.
Our esteemed race volunteers are listed in the Port (left) Column.
Jim Riffle provided a "safety boat" at most of the races, so we presented him with a jelly-filled doughnut (his favorite).
Also, as past officers and highly involved members, Jim and Mimi's many contributions to the club over the years were acknowledged with this coat-hook GYC plaque made by Beth and John Auld.  Nice!

Race Chairman Kevin Preuss and Club Secretary/Treasurer Lisa Duret were similarly recognized for their efforts.  Kevin organizes each race, and Lisa welcomes everyone attending our social events, keeps our membership records and they both do lots more for the GYC.

Beth Auld is our devoted Committee Boat Chairperson and was presented with a gift for her many efforts on behalf of the Club. Kevin presented a token of our appreciation.
And Beth presented a gift to "Commodore" Tom Schroeder for his efforts in leading the club.

We all recognized Arlene Truex for hosting us at every race at her home which serves as the "home port" of the GYC.   Her place is a beehive of activity on every race day with the coming and goings of race set-up and committee boat volunteers, a couple of boats berthed and rigged there, and the protest meeting after every race on her patio.  And she sails also - see below.

In addition to everything else, Arlene crewed for Tom a few times.  Here they thank the Committee Boat volunteers for running a great race.
A shout out was given to our social event hosts.  Margaret Powers hosted BOTH the Spring Social and the July 4th breakfast.  Dolores and Ed Krome hosted the Labor Day breakfast.  And although weather got in the way, Krystal and Tom Harrell volunteered to host the Memorial Day breakfast.  Photos of those events are in the Starboard (right) Column.

Now for the SAILING awards:

Special Awards

The "Ghost Sailor" award was presented to Laura Garrett, appropriately absent but with us "in spirit".   While we were fortunate to have her sail with us in two races, we knew she really would have liked to sail every race.  We took a photo of the large, gaudy trophy, but mysteriously nothing was visible in the .jpg file when opened.  Huh. The trophy is too big to ship to you Laura, so it will be at your folks' place.

The coveted "Booby Prize" is the legendary chamber pot from which many a famous GYC Labor Day Trophy Race-winning sailor has downed a beer. It has been repurposed to this more humorous calling.   In the last race two screw-ups were made.  One by Matt Bartlett and another by Tom Schroeder.  So they share the honor of being the 2019 recipients. This is not Matt's "first rodeo" with the booby prize - an appropriate pun as you will see.  Explanations of the circumstances leading to the award were acted out to the amusement of attendees:

Matt (right), with miniature main sheet in hand describes how the main sheet of his boat somehow, some way, in the congestion rounding the mark, got wrapped around adjacent sailor Dianne.
“Honestly" Matt says, "You can see how it could have happened to anyone.”.  True of course, but we were entertained by Matt's explanation nonetheless.

Tom's turn came next. His flub was made as timer on the committee boat.  Since he was too embarrassed to self-report, Cindy and Margaret, fellow volunteers on the Committee Boat that day described it:
To Margaret's and everyone else's amusement, Cindy acts out Tom's surprise when he realized that he gave the signal to start the race several minutes early.  Since the sailors had all set their stopwatches when the five-minutes-to-start horn was sounded, they all looked dumbfounded when they heard the starting horn.  This after Tom felt so proud of his anchoring job. "High-Five Syndrome" strikes again!
Matt with his miniature main-sheet (is that what that looks like?)  and Tom with his new "fool-proof" (we'll see) timer accept the booby prize which spent the past year proudly displayed on a shelf in Sherri Agnew's garage.  Matt said he would display it over the off-season, but left it at the Auld's.  Last to leave, Tom ended up with it.  For now.   Despite its appearance, it is an important piece of Grandview history.  So be sure to ask about its location, and inquire as to its’ well-being the next time you see Matt or Tom.
Okay, now that all of that splendid camaraderie is warming the cockles of your heart, lets get competitive (as we are also known for).  On to the awards for winning races!

Holiday "Trophy Race" Winners:

Memorial Day Trophy Race Winner- John Auld
Due to the club's long history, we had to add a layer to the Memorial Day Trophy which is now a two-story monument.
July 4th Trophy Race Winner- Matt Bartlett
The July 4th stained glass trophy was made by Judy Voelz. We may have to move some of the more "historic" name plates to the back sometime soon.
Labor Day Trophy Race Winner - Catey Hale
(not pictured, but the trophy and Race Chairman Kevin are)
The framed stained glass sailing scene was donated to the club by Wayne and Arlene Truex. The easel was donated in memory of Wayne by Wayne's brothers.
Season Total Points Winners by Class:
How is this determined?
For each race in addition to 10 points for finishing, a sailor is awarded 10 points for each competitor he/she beats. The cumulative points for the entire season determines the winners in each class and the overall club champion. A sailor that does well in a well-attended race accumulates a lot of points fast.

We had some very close scores as described below.

Crew Class:
The minimum number of points possible (10) determined  the 2nd vs 3rd place finishers:

First Place: - Phil Bush (not pictured)
Second Place: -  Paul Hass (not pictured)
Third Place: - Elizabeth Hale (not pictured)

International Class:
The minimum number of points possible (10) determined  the 1st vs.2nd  place finishers:

First Place - Tom Schroeder

Second Place - John Auld
Third Place - Catey Hale
(not pictured)  Unlike your 2015 winnings, we'll be getting your trophies right to ya there Catey (see Starboard Column).

Laser Class:
Just 20 points determined the 1st place vs. 2nd place winners (and the Club Champion)

1st Place - Matt Bartlett
2nd Place - Jim Voelz
(not pictured)

3rd Place - Kevin Preuss
Yes, you've seen a lot of Kevin in the above photos as Race Chairman awarding trophies and medals.  In this case he is receiving a medal, presented by Commodore Tom Schroeder
SEASON CHAMPION - MATT BARTLETT

We are expecting another great season in 2020
