Welcome Rains and Visitors - July 9th "Trophy Race" Report

The start of race #2.  Good winds for first two marks.
First-time volunteers Terry & Bernice Rains joined us (Welcome!) .  And we had visitors from faraway places sailing with us.  Rachel, a friend of John Gall’s from Wyoming crewed for John on the Hobie catamaran. Kudos to Rachel for re-stitching the torn jib from a practice run earlier in the week.  Gediminas, Tom & Julia Schroeder’s former foreign exchange student from Lithuania (now living in California) crewed for Tom in the JY-15, and helped out with a "wing-to-wing" finish (wind from directly behind, main sail out to one side, jib out to other side for maximum sail surface area for push from behind).   Gediminas’ bride, Christina, cheered them on from the Truex dock.

Welcome back also to Sherri Agnew who, as part of her 2017 debut, came in 2nd place overall in the 2nd race.  We were also fortunate to have John Auld and Paul Hass compete.  They were able to get the yellow Y-Flyer patched up after their June 25th difficulties.

And Cindy Bartlett was back on the water, assisting Jim Riffle in keeping an eye out for sailors needing assistance from the Riffle pontoon boat.  Thanks Jim and Cindy!   Matt Bartlett attempted to be the first wind-surfer racing in twenty-something years, but alas, the winds were too weak to allow passage to the main lake from the inlet.  We will look forward to a future history making attempt.

Tom Jennings came in first overall in both races, and by wide margins.

We had good winds to the 2nd mark of each race, but the final segments of both races were excruciatingly windless. What a change from the epic winds of the June 25th race.

Sailors sit motionless on way to 3rd mark. There are 4 sailboats visible in this picture, right?
We had a fun protest meeting at Arlene Truex’ s  where we re-lived the action packed race of June 25th and “cried in our beer” about our mistreatment by the wind in this race.

Thanks very much to our Committee Boat team of Beth Auld, Bob Orben Terry & Bernice Rains and Mimi Riffle.  Thanks also to John Auld for setting up the race and to Kevin Preuss for organizing.
